Gold star for Samantha. That quotation is indeed the assassin's creed as described in Bartol's novel. He attributes it to the ruler Hassan-i-Sabbah, who recruited the assassins with promises of paradise. It's from his name we get the useful word hashish, which was what he supposedly gave his killers before sending them out to do his dirty work.

Not sure how effectively that would work IRL. Can't have your assassins getting all mellowed out during working hours. Probably would have had better luck with amphetamines. Of course, they hadn't yet been synthesized by the Nazi chemists at I.G. Farben. Hardly surprising that speed would become extremely popular with the Nazi high command. Never met anyone familiar with this family of drugs who found that information surprising.

Hey I played the game Assassin's Creed. Ezio rules!!!! but only now I realize that it comes from this novel Ernest talks about. I had a nice and informative trip around wikipedia. :D
