So do you ever regret having Anna kill off Steve? Or was he just a character who had run his course?

I certainly don't miss him. Some individuals would be annoying in any society.

Steve's role was to make other characters look better (I don't think we can call any of the men in these stories "good".) :geek:

Isn't that the definition of sidekick?

Steve was a young man who was ungrateful, sadistic, jealous, possessed of an almost psychotic anger and had real issues about responsibility and how to relate with humans (and slaves as it is an involved legal question as to whether you count them as being human) In short, this guy was a sexually sadistic sociopath. In fact the only nice thing his society would ever say of the guy was that his attitude to females was obsessively possessive, in our society though. . .Hell, if there was an afterlife he would probably chuckle at the thought of the totally innocent Cathy facing the possibility of execution for his murder

So do sociopaths scare you?

Actually I read an article where a psychologist was moaning about the line in Sherlock where Benedict Cumberbatch refers to himself as a "high functioning sociopath" and his essential point is that that there is no difference between Psychopathy and sociopathy in medical terms and that they are the same thing.

Neither 'psychopath' nor 'sociopath' have been considered valid diagnostic terms since the '60s. Everyone, at the back of their mind, knows this, but pop culture is completely in love with the psycho/sociopath idea and who could blame it? It's fascinating to think of someone out there being like a human cancer cell.

I think we take comfort in the idea that evildoers are an anomaly, a very small percentage of the population who are not "right" in the head. Otherwise we have to accept that most humans are selfish cruel assholes capable of inflicting boundless misery on each other.

Yup, some critic somewhere said that the bad guy has to be pathological, because for him to be anything other would distract the viewer from the societal systems in place that might make a monster. Literally my favourite thing about your gents is that they are 100% the product of their environment.

I always thought that sociopaths where people like The Big Bang Theory's Sheldon Cooper that just didn't get social niceties. Hence people with high IQ's seem a tad 'strange'. Psychopaths are incapable of empathy and so do not normally exhibit real emotion as a lot of emotion revolves around caring about something/someone. Sociopaths have emotions but the psychopaths don't. This is of course a generalisation.

Its interesting to note that several US government officials have labelled 24's Jack Bauer a psychopath for his lack of a reaction to using torture. Not responding to somebody being tortured is a sign of mental trouble. This worries me as the people telling me how they were tortured/mutilated didn't bother me much and seeing it on TV or the comics of E don't invoke anything as I say its not real. That said actually thinking about doing it to somebody (even as "play") gets a strong worry reaction. I hope this means that I am basically sound in mind.

I think its telling that the most memorable villains are those that you can relate to/ empathise with. They are a case of the hero would have been the villain but for the single different choice they made. Why is the demon evil?

This is why I like Greg Spry's beyond Cloud Nine Book as every person has both good/bad parts.

Evil is a point of view.

(You know, some would say "it is the Jedi who are evil")
