SPOILER ALERT

TLDR: this comic is clever and sets a light-hearted, funny tone.

Well, it’s long, long after the release date. But I thought I’d finally write my traditional “long review” of E’s last comic: “The Dairy.” As many of you may know, I usually edit the comics by E and Triona for dofantasy, and the in-depth reviews I write of those comics come as a natural result of having to study each comic in detail for the editing process. For whatever reason, I did not get sent this last comic, so I guess I’ve been sulking about that for months and I never wrote my usual review. lol.

But whatever! Let’s get to the comic itself.

THE GOOD:

If there was one word I’d use to describe this comic, it would be: “clever.” The Dairy was full of clever situations, clever new props and especially clever dialogue. E is far and away the most creative person in the adult industry, and at least the most creative that I know of.

Let’s look at the early scene in the bar. I really liked that our 2 female leads seemed to be having fun for most first half of the story. These women were ENJOYING themselves, they went out to the bar with the purpose of getting laid and having an adventure. So many other bdsm comics would tell us a story with only crying and panicking, but E gives us something far more interesting and (dare I say it?) -subtle. I really like the idea that not all the women in this world are miserable, some of them have found a way to enjoy themselves.

And let’s be honest, that’s how real life works. The real world we live in is actually a profoundly fucked-up place, but most people just move on with their lives and accept the fucked-up things without dwelling on them. E has figured out how to make his characters do that. And E’s willingness let his characters move on with their lives, fall in love, or go out for a fun night of drinking, even though they live in a world of sexual slavery…that is what sets E’s work above even other bdsm fantasy worlds (such as the world of PA Magazine).

I liked seeing how picking up a free woman in a bar looks in the E-verse. I liked seeing the overt groping and aggressive sexual talk accepted as normal. I liked the way the girls shouted “woo-hoo” and threw their clothes out of the car. It all seemed very plausible, given what we know about this world.

Let’s talk for a minute about dialogue. I was amazed at how downright funny the dialogue was. My favorite line was when the guy in the bar said “We don’t pick-up, we confiscate.” That is again, really clever, I almost feel like I could use that in a real-life bar. Also really like the little exchange where the girls said “We’re smart, right?” -“Well, we kinda walked into this shitty situation ourselves.” -“Shut up Clarabell.”

Let’s talk artwork. As always, E used facial expressions and body language in a way few artists ever bother to do. I love how the puppygirls manage to convey how superior they think they are to the cowgirls. I especially loved the image of the puppygirl on the hilltop, towering above the herd.

I also like the bits of philosophy that, more and more, get snuck in. For example, the puppygirl’s owner talking about how superior they were to the cowgirls. And the swipe at giant corporations (a giant puppy-training corporation put the slut-herders small training firm out of business). And I especially enjoyed that at the end we saw the “PETW” protesters, who were calling for… not very much of a change. I really like the idea that the liberal protest against the system has been subverted and is actually now supporting the system, because the issues that they “protest” against are only minor details. Even if the “protesters” got all their demands met, the over-all system would be pretty much the same (and that, by the way, is a pretty solid criticism of the modern liberal movement in America).

I enjoyed the girls finding an old classmate they didn’t like from school and her only thought being “oh darn.” I love it when we see women turned against each other. Similarly, I loved when the secretary Beatrice is forced to give them her clothes at the end and she thinks “damn stupid harlots.” There is just something very sexy about women hating other women, especially women they don’t know very well.

I also really liked the “moral” of the story. At the end, the girls simply threw themselves at the feet of a random man who looked like he might be sympathetic, begged as hard as they could and apologized for being so stupid and “voila!” Happy ending. That’s a nice moral for slave-girls everywhere. ☺

THE BAD

Much as I hate to hurt E’s feelings (and bearing in mind that this comic is still so far ahead of most porn that it’s not even funny), I do have some criticisms of this book.

In the main, I felt it dragged a bit. It’s long and normally that’s a good thing for these comics, but this one sometimes feels long as well. The scenes of those executives in the lab, for example, seemed to be at least twice as long as they needed to be. For a while now we have seen E planting seeds for some kind of “genetic experiment gone wrong” storyline; no doubt it will lead to a future antagonist for stories, but even so, we do need to keep the story moving. I think some condensing and shortening of these pages would have helped the plot.

Similarly, as much as I love E’s dialogue, I couldn’t help but feel that this comic was a bit… wordy. Although the dialogue is great, there seemed to be too much of it, and at times it slowed down the story. It kind of reminds me of what happened in the later Harry Potter books, where nothing got cut out anymore and things started to drag a little bit. (boy, it sure would be great if dofantasy assigned E a skilled editor to help with situations like that wouldn’t it? Hint-Hint.)

My final criticism is mostly just a matter of taste. E really likes creating new characters in new settings, this shows off E’s peerless ability at “universe expansion.” That’s fine and I enjoy stories like that, but personally… I am all about character development and emotion. There is only so much attachment we can have to characters we just met, so it’s hard to be to attached to the characters in this story. By contrast, with the cast of recurring characters (like Maggie, Sherry and Peter) we already have this built-in attachment. So the stories that involve them are much more interesting to me. I hope that in the future, E will follow the pattern set in “the Hotel” and “the Society” and find a way to touch base with the familiar characters, even in the stories that focus more on “universe expansion.”

I used to rank E’s comics on a 5 star scale, but I don’t feel like doing that on this review. It’s hard to compare E’s comics to other comics; hell, it’s hard to compare them to each other! E is an experimenter, E takes risks and tries new things that you have not seen before. Not everything always works, but more often than not it does. This comic had a tone that was light-hearted and fun, it was funny even. Yet it was set in a world of sexual degradation. That’s a really unique and interesting thing to do. How do we compare that to a horror comic about torture? How do we even compare this comic to the more emotional love story of Peter and Maggie? They’re just so different.

But, wherever this comic “ranks” compared to others, I’m happy that E keeps bringing some much-needed variety and experimentation to the world of porn. It’s my hope that in 20 years time we will see more porn, especially movies and cartoon shows, that follow E’s lead.

With any luck we are on the leading edge of the future of adult entertainment. See you all next time. ☺

I agree with much what you said. My feelings on the comics are that I felt the main characters belong in a comic about a 'club' rather than a SITS comic. This probably do to my taste. I like smart and proud women in SITS comics. The other thing was the comic wasn't really a SITS comic. The only training the girls receive was moo eat grass and don't talk or your tongue will be cut off. It felt like E wanted it to be a Clinic like comic but put SItS in the title to appease fans.

I did enjoy the artwork and part of the story and its still better than lot of the stuff out there.

Great reviews

Actually, I thought it was kind of interesting that there seemed to be a hierarchy and even a sense of pride among the cowgirls, despite their obvious physical inability to communicate. For example, page 27, look at the brunette's body language in the top panel. The way E draws her face in the lower panel fits more with the "ah, shit, this still isn't a dream, I'm still a double amputee 6-7 months along with my ninth calf" viewpoint, but in the top panel her facial expression along with her body language seems to convey a sense of self-importance, like "I make something essential for human life, in addition to more of me".

I guess they had to launch this one without any editing because they released nothing new for a while.

Thanks for the detailed and thoughtful review, always appreciated.

Full disclosure, I don't have a big hucow fetish so this one is the least personal of my comics. The main characters are derivatives of a couple of my old-unpublished characters form a similar themed comic (partially). In that particular story their bovine experience lasts 4-5 pages. Compare that to this one and see why it drags a bit :)

(By the way, the original duo of that comic make cameos in "Slave Fair" and "The Stables". Look for the two girls in cowboy hats. In the Stables cameo, they even give a hint about the beginning of the story.)

Interesting point! I also like seeing hierarchies between sub/slave girls and I like to see body language used to tell a story, but I hadn't noticed the way E combine those 2 elements together on that page. Good catch!
