SPOILER WARNING FOR THIS ENTIRE REVIEW. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

This is the latest I have ever been in writing a review of one of E’s comics, so I will dive right in and waste no more time.

“Repurposed” was a masterpiece. These comics have grown so good that I am beginning to get sad that more people don’t know about them. It seems unfair that we lucky few people on this forum should be the only ones who know about these comics. This is a revolution. This is a new frontier. I want the whole world to see and know about this. I want everyone to see this accomplishment. It’s like when I watch a truly great TV and I urge all my friends to watch it. This is soooooo good that it’s not enough for me to just read it. I want other people to read it to, so I can enthusiastically discuss the fine points of how good it is.

-I must note in the interest of fairness, that I had the great honor of being the editor of this work. Since I was involved in the making of it, I can hardly be considered an unbiased viewpoint.

Be that as it may, I LOVED this story. I loved its structure. I loved the way it added to and explained things about the E-verse. I loved the incredibly emotional highs that the sex scenes achieved. I loved the detail and believability of the dialogue. I loved the level of detail that went into making the backgrounds. I loved the sheer SIZE of the thing. E refused to cut it down shorter, even though dofantasy had no need for a long epic story, E clearly WANTED to tell one.

This comic lives up to the high standards that E has already established in this line of erotic comics. I will try to structure my review in a slightly more orderly fashion, to make it easier to read and to skim.

THE GREAT EXPANDING UNIVERSE

It has often been noted that E’s comics got better as E went along. No one denies this, I think. The first few comics were certainly good, but they were not as good as the later comics. I have often wondered how the earlier comics would have looked if the modern E, with a superior skill level, went back and applied that superior skill to the earlier attempts. The flashbacks in this comic, answered that question.

I found it very enjoyable to return back in time, to the period when all the girls were still “free” and to see the earlier E-verse expanded and given greater detail. Notice how we got to see the unique personalities of each girl: Sherry wanted to be a businesswoman and she was naively unaware of how bad her life could get. Maggie was shy and starry eyed about her love letter, and was naively unaware of how bad her life could get, Tawnie already had a crush on Gwen and was naively unaware of how bad her life could get. (see what they all have in common, lol?)

We did not get to see those things about those characters in BG1 and BG2, but now we get to see their backstory in all it’s glorious detail, which makes their final fate as slaves that much more intense and enjoyable. It’s really very good writing.

One detail I REALLY liked is the small line E threw in about the laws changing. Apparently, girls were initially protected from slavery until they graduated high school, but the law changed in the middle of the school year, and that legal protection was removed. I LOVED that detail, because it explains the universe so well.

See, that law-change explains why there was sudden explosion of enslavement of girls at the beginning of the comic series. In BG1, nearly every girl in school was free. But by “For Sale” Cindy was the only free girl left. That’s a great, great image, but it begs the question, what were the boys waiting for? Why were there so many free girls when the story started? The detail of the law-change explains that very nicely.

That attention to detail is really what sets E apart. I am not sure how many readers of porn would even notice that, but E noticed it, and decided to correct it. And the fact that I noticed it too makes me feel good about my own skills as a reader. The E comics are fun to read because of that complexity. They can be studied and scrutinized and gosh darn it, it works. E has clearly put a lot of thought into these.

I also liked the revelation that the state issues strict guidelines for women’s bodies and banishes all women who do not meet them. That explains why all the women in the E-verse have such un-realistically shaped bodies. I love the fact that ALL the women are beautiful, so beauty gives women no advantage. And I love how neatly E explains that.

THE GREAT ART

I always feel I am least qualified to talk about art. I am mostly a lover of stories, the art is an afterthought to me. But even some one such as me can see how good the art is in this story. I love the detail, for example, of the framed family portrait of Jeff’s family, in the background of a scene. That portrait is the first introduction of Jeff’s mother. By working the picture into the background of the scene, E foreshadows her introduction later.

How many other works of porn even USE foreshadowing? Much less use it so well?

And Re-purposed is full of details like that. Too many for me to name. I MUST live to see these made into a cartoon miniseries, as they should be. If I have to make it myself, I will. The way I see it, all it really takes is money. If I could raise enough capital, then I could hire other people to make and release the series. It needs to be made! The world needs to see this.

THE GREAT EMOTIONS

I am worried that this is too gushing in its praise, but there is so much great stuff that I have not even talked about yet. For example, the emotional highs that were mixed with sex utterly blew my mind.

The scene where Heather and Jeff had sex of the first time, and Heather lost her virginity… my god! So much going on at once. First Heather feels great shame and guilt in front of her father. Her father has totally, insanely unreasonable moral standards, he tells Heather she should feel guilty for getting r@ped. He tells her she is to blame for her own r@pe. But… and this is the key point… she DOES feel that way. She feels shamed and guilty. Her feelings are real, even if logically her dad’s rationale is insane. Because Heather’s father has such significance to her identity, she really does feel guilty and shamed. Maybe she is also angry, maybe she is mad at him, on an intellectual level, but at an emotional level, she is crushed.

Heather wants her father’s love. She wants his respect and his kindness. But he withholds these things from her. And that explains the core of her character. Which brings me nicely to my next point…

THE GREAT CHARACTERS

E was just getting started! As Jeff is r@ping Heather, Heather’s father appears again, right in the middle of her r@pe. And he AGAIN blames her. In the middle of being r@ped up the ass, Heather begs her father to rescue her. But not only does he not rescue her, he begins belting her and telling her she deserves what she is getting!!! This is probably the most intense feeling of abandonment that I have ever seen. (And it is btw hot as hell)

Heather’s entire sense of self is utterly destroyed in that scene. Her father’s rejection of her leaves her with nothing to latch onto. Now, all she wants is some ones approval. She desperately is looking for the approval that her father never gave her.

Into that environment, steps Jeff’s mother, who is probably my new favorite character. Jeff’s mother skillfully gives the lost and confused Heather something to latch onto: “make yourself a better woman.” Jeff’s mother fills Heather’s mind with new ideas.

If Heather can work hard to be a better woman: Jeff’s mom seems to promise, then the big empty hole Heather feels in herself will finally be filled. The longing for approval that she got from her father can instead be filled by approval of her master and of society at large. If Heather can prove herself to be a “good woman” then she can escape the feelings of worthlessness that her father cursed her with.

God Damn. That’s good stuff.

And that’s only a small section of the story.

THE GREAT THEMES AND IDEAS

The really amazing thing is, a year later Heather HAS become a better slave. Now that she has been trained by Jeff, under the guidance of Jeff’s mother, Heather can cook and clean and has all these skills that she never used to have. She has changed. Whether this change is for the better or worse depends on the perspective of who is judging it. Everyone around Heather tells her she should be proud of this change, so she is. Heather is trying to be a “better woman” she is trying to live up to the ideals that Jeff’s mother taught her.

And that thorough exploration of this moral system is my over-all favorite part of the story.

Jeff’s mother is a brilliant creation. Her addition to the universe gives us an enthusiastic, unapologetic voice for the “rightness” of the E-verse. I am a real person, who lives in the real world. So I would never be able to make the arguments she makes. I would look for the flaws in any argument that seems to legitimize slavery. But in this imaginary world, where slavery is common, it makes sense that some one would be there, making full and unapologetic argument that what they do is morally right.

This is not perverted, says Jeff’s mother, we should not be ashamed that we enjoy this. We should be proud. This is natural and good.

Wow. What a mind-fuck.

The sexuality and beliefs of the parents affected the sexuality and beliefs of their children. We got to see the parents of Heather, Nathalie and Jeff and each one of these “role models” deeply affected their children’s approach to sex. Only E could get the audience to question deep philosophical ideas, such as the nature and morality of freedom, and how much of our beliefs come from our parents, while still delivering, hot, exciting porn.

THE GREAT SEXY HOTNESS

And that, of course, is the lynch pin of the whole project. People have tried to make “smart porn” before. But often “intelligent pornt ends up feeling boring. Porn has to be SEXY. The great ideas discussed in porn must never undermine the porn’s ability to turn me on. I want to jack off when I look at this! Porn must never forget that it is porn; that is there to make the audience feel aroused.

Alan Moore tried to make several “artistic” pornographic comics. And I have read them. But Moore was worried too much about the ‘art’ part and not enough about the ‘porn’ part. The E comics are porn through and through. The ‘art’ and the ‘porn’ elements compliment each other, they seamlessly blend.

Yes, this comic is art, but is also porn. It is great porn, it is hot as hell. This comic is really fun to jack off too. In addition to achieving high-minded success of complex thoughts and ideas, it still fulfills the ordinary purpose of getting me off.

FLAWS? AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT?

I could go on and on about more things I want to talk about in this comic. But I should try to stop myself at some point. I can’t say everything all at once, after all.

So I will try to wind to a close, by examining the weaknesses of this comic. No work of art is perfect. Perfection is boring anyways, so what is this comic not–so-good at?

…well the fantasy scene in the shower seemed a bit long and un-necessary. E loves doing scenes that take place only in the character’s imagination. I think E likes them because it creates a chance to draw new things. But me personally, I have never liked those scenes. So we got to see all the girls in the story in a giant, lesbian orgy. So what? I don’t care about that scene because it’s not real. It did not really happen in the story. One page of fantasy might have been fun, but to have it go on for page after page? I got bored. Considering how amazingly long this comic was to begin with, I felt like a lot of that scene could have been cut.

Other flaws? Well… not too many. I have the unique position of having been the editor for this story (I just can’t help bragging about that, I am so proud I got to be a part of it, lol). So if there had been any big problems in the story… well I probably would have caught them in the editing process and contacted E for guidance on how to fix them. I went over this comic with a fine-toothed comb and I scrutinized every detail. I practically have it memorized. My pride as an editor makes it hard to believe there is anything much really wrong with this story. ☺

PARTING THOUGHTS

I liked the lack of love in Jeff and Heather’s relationship. They are not a loving couple, in the way that Peter and Maggie are. They’re relationship is different. Some readers might see that as a flaw. But I see it as exploring new territory. We’ve already had one love-story in our Master and Slave world. We don’t need all of the stories to be love stories. Good sex can be had in a totally loveless relationship.

In fact, the most fascinating moment for me is near the end, where Jeff calls his slaves “miserable sycophants” and tells them to shut up. Jeff put a great amount of effort into breaking the will of his 2 slaves. He broke them and re-made them into different people. He (with the help of his mother) re-programed them, he “re-purposed” them to the point where they have completely different belief systems, sexual responses and self-images. And in his moment of triumph, when the once proud girls who rejected him, are fighting for the privilege of sucking his cock and fighting for the privilege of continuing to be his slave, is he happy?

No.

Jeff calls his creations “miserable sycophants” he is not happy that they are such good slaves. He has achieved everything he ever used to fantasize about, and he is still not happy.

Well… maybe that is going to far. Maybe Jeff is bit happier now, lol. He seemed more satisfied with his life when 2 girls sucking his dick at once than he did jacking off to their picture. But that satisfaction is fleeting. Its not enough for him. He wants something more, but does not know what that something more might be. Is there a moral in there? Did E plan all of this out as a clever statement about the difference between a loving master-slave relationship and a loveless one? Is it perhaps a reminder that even great sex with beautiful women will not necessarily transform a unhappy person into a happy one? Are we meant to consider the possibility that sex is over-rated in our society? Perhaps as important and as satisfying as sex is, we put it on too much of a pedestal. Perhaps we should remember that while we should not be ashamed our sexuality, neither should we expect it to be the magic fix-all for a happy life. Is that perhaps what E was thinking when this was written? Are we the audience meant to ask ourselves these types of questions when we read it?

…I like to think so.

A late one but you make up for it with a wonderfully detaled and astute review. Great job Otherguy. I agree with you on almost all points.

Yet you post this great review only here. Kind of preaching to the choir. :D I suggest post this on the dofantasy forum to convert the heathens, or put it on fetlife for the ignorant masses.

I like the point you made otherguy about how Jeff was acting like he had a Stepford Wife but missed the things that made them actually them. The fun was out of the relationship. Its this conflict that we the readers enjoy and Sherry is an example of the 'spunk' staying.

Having the girls being simply 'yes' all the time would grow boring and E has done a wonderful job in keeping our attention with the different but interesting girls. Maggie who accepts and has love. Sherry who resists but joins the dark side. Melanie is just chirpy!

That is a really good idea, I never thought of that. I will look around and try to find places on fetlife and the dofantasy forum to post this kind of thing. Thanks for the suggestion!
