Hey folks. You probably know about the spiderwoman comic cover made my Milo Manara. looks like it created a big controversy, people say that it is pornographic.

I love it! :D

As a comic cover, no. I'm pretty against it, as it doesn't give anything about the comic other than this woman superhero has an ass and a back.

I do like Manara's work normally but this one? naah

Did you see where this guy rendered it in poser to show how ludicrous the pose was?

Well, she is "Spider"-woman, so a little superhuman bending is possible. :)
But seriously, the 3D rendering is all wrong. The 3D artist is definitely not a "2D" artist, and s/he is purposefully misrepresenting Manara's pose. It is a classic porn pose we are all familiar with. Only thing that jumps out of Manara's image is the positioning of the head. In my humble opinion, the master made a mistake with Spiderwoman's jaw. She looks like she has mandibular prognathism.

On the raciness of the cover, I don't understand the surprise. If you go to Milo Manara for a cover, you get something like this. What were they expecting?

Where Manara is concerned, I'm more an admirer than a fan. I think he has terrific art chops but I don't respond to his work emotionally.

But if I were a fan, I'd be very disappointed in this image, which lacks the delicate touch that distinguishes this artist. It really looks like student work at best, and that's a pretty big step down for an artist of this quality. Don't know why he was even considered for this project, as his work is about as far removed from super-hero comics as anything out there.

And to think, they actually pay agencies to come up with these ideas. I suppose at a certain level a certain kind of executive who isn't very sure of their position secretly fears that if Creative presents them with something they don't like and don't get and they voice their concerns, they'll be thought tragically unhip. A lot of dumb media decisions are made on that basis, mainly because ageism is such a curse in media industries that experienced execs cower at the thought being considered out of the loop on what young consumers will buy.

In fact, I don't think this image would be nearly as attractive to the PG-13 audience as a more conventional superhero comic rendering of whatever sort. They don't go to see popcorn movies because they're a bunch of art lovers.

The whole system of creative decision making has been turned upside down in recent years by the influx of "new media" hires who may claim to be in touch with younger consumers and speak an impenetrable language of their own that befuddles executive brains (not that hard to do) but the results have been decidedly mixed.

Last year, for example, theatrical box-office receipts were down 30% over the previous year. It's a bit of a misleading figure because the previous year just happened to be enormously profitable, but there is informed talk about the problem of marketing the same kind of product to the same viewer over and over and at what point fatigue sets in.

The smarter decision-makers at various pay cable outfits have done very well by counter-programming against the comic-book CGI extravaganza product with adult dramatic series. Much of the best talent, all the way up to Martin Scorsese, have fled film for cable because they don't want to make popcorn movies and rightly believe their loyal fans want something more substantive.

Yeah I agree that the 3-D rendering in the picture was dishonest. Below is a better 3-D rendering of it. The pose is fine.

http://tintachinaceluloide.files.wordpr ... =560&h=488

It is sad that a sexy picture has yet again sparked outrage. If they want to have a diversity of women in the comics, fine, but do people really have to get offended at EVERY SINGLE PICTURE that is sexy? Basically they are saying that it is sexuality itself that they are offended by. The outrage economy of the internet is becoming ridiculous (I'm sure that I'll be more likely to get support of my view on this blog, but perhaps not from everyone)

ernest, I agree that people often misuse statistics due to either ignorance or malice. It reminds me of climate change denialists who for years declared that the world hadn't heated up at all since 1998, ignoring that 1998 was an outlier year and that the average temperature for the Earth continued to increase.

I have to confess that I liked the second 3d rendering better than the real thing by Manara. :D

The outage, at least in my opinion, is that the sexiness of the character is the only attribute shown, over even her actual superheroe-ness. And that we should kinda be past that, or at least show off other attributes.
Hell I like Red Sonia and at least get covers show that she kicks medieval ass.

But this picture wasn't even the main cover, to my understanding. It was just a second choice cover much like E sometimes draws two covers and picks one. Also it DOES show her super power. She climbed up the wall and climbed over onto the roof in the position a spider would. Peter Parker is often on all fours in some position. He isn't standing up in every situation either. Yes the shot is sexy, but it is fundamentally an action shot.

I agree with that. This is the classic spidey pose with a manara twist. The problem I think is the ccostume. It looks like body paint rather than spandex.

Right. One expects to see some wrinkles around the joints at least. Also gloves and boots...

And the costume... I have never read a Spider-Woman comic before and I know nothing about her origins, but I think this is a terrible, terrible costume for a woman who has spider-like powers. Red and yellow is not the best camo in an urban area (except maybe in a Dr Seuss town). And the armpit webs? Why oh why?

The people I've seen complain about it are angry at the posture, not the costume itself. While I'm tempted to just roll my eyes and ignore them, the fact is that they can scare companies or other parts of society into always being afraid that their publications might offend someone somewhere and make it difficult to freely create content.

Erenisch, I don't think wrinkles would have calmed those who are attacking the image. And I'm thinking that you are being sarcastic about her red costume given Spider MAN's costume.

:D Don't get me started on his costume. I like the venom version though.

But you gotta turn a blind I to Peter Parker's weird costume, because he designs it himself as a teenager and it wasn't originally made for crime-fighting. So it is basically a bad high-school Halloween costume.
Still, If the character wasn't quirky and fun-loving, Marvel would have definitely changed it in the movie versions, the way they did with X-Men.

Ok, here is my version of the Manara cover. (Immediately after posting it, I realized I screwed up in a number of ways, but this is what you get in 10 minutes stolen from my post-comic vacation time. :D )

I think I'll call it "Spider-Mags".

What are you talking about? She wears skin-colored transparent spandex. :)
