Recently saw Escape from LA. Whoever voted for that, your opinion needs adjustment.
Wow.

Or perhaps yours does? :melanie:

And no it wasn't me. Starman has had my only vote.

All of ours do in a metaphorical sense, but no.
That film jumped the shark so hard the jumper flew over into the middle of the ocean where, ironically, another shark happened to jump up and catch him as of it were a prepared stunt involving copious amounts of cg.

It's rather hard to defend in imagine.

Escape from L.A jumped the shark so hard that it actually ruptured it's ligaments and collapsed in an agonised (or agonising?) state

In defense of 'Escape from L.A.' it had Bruce Campbell, and Pam Grier, and Steve Buscemi! Quite aside from Kurt Russell.

How do you fuck that up? :x

(well, they did)

Yeah, well, I'm one of the 4% who voted for it. It's certainly not one of his best films. It wouldn't have been Ed Wood's best film.

But like most people who live in L.A., I always get a kick out of seeing someone else's idea of how it would be after something apocalyptic and if I can tell it from what I see here every day.

So far, no luck on that. Bladerunner comes the closest to how it is now, but there are whole sections of it in which if civilization as we know it collapses they wouldn't notice for several days at least.

But no, I'm not defending the movie, only my right to yet another guilty pleasure.

Is it a pleasure because it is guilty or are you just insane?

I have Skyline and am constantly amazed at how the folks there act. Like they didn't know water would stop coming out of the taps?
No filling up the bathtub ahead of time or frantic filling of bottles etc?

Some places you know would survive pretty much anything others make you wonder how they are already surviving.

There are limits even to the abilities of Mr Campbell to resurrect poor film-making

I like the Furturama episode where Fry thinks he's in an (even further in the future) apocalyptic wasteland but everyone else is all "Meh, that's just L.A."

It's an ongoing joke between Nina and me. We'll walk or drive past something particularly representative of L.A. weirdness, look at each other and say "bad science fiction."

Of course, William Gibson had that figured out a long time ago. Maybe it's not that so much of L.A. looks like the aftermath of some terrible catastrophe. Perhaps the catastrophe was building the place to begin with. Though we've effectively stolen all the water from the Owen's Valley and bought much more from the Colorado River (now reduced to a muddy trickle in some places), it might have occurred to someone that planting a huge city in a place where arid desert meets rocky coast in a basin that traps most forms of toxic emissions wasn't such a great idea.

But then, nobody really built L.A. as we know it. It sort of just happened.

This is my last attempt to defend anything about Escape from L.A., but it has been observed that most futuristic fiction is really about the present and as such the movie does capture moments of the zany reality of this place as it exists today.

This doesn't make it a great movie, or even a good one. I just find it funny in morbid way.

In Deus Ex Human Revolution (a game) the authors commented that they tried to imagine the future. They said that far from Jet Packs we now have email but paper is not extinct.

Or summed up:

The more things change the more they stay the same.
